Studying the Bible -- What is the Book of Ephesians About?

The book of Ephesians is a letter from Paul to the church in Ephesus. This letter and the letter to the Colossians were apparently written at the same time and are very similar. The book of Ephesians emphasizes the superiority of Christ above all authorities. Paul showed that Jesus existed before He lived as a man and, through His work, we can live after death with Him. Paul reminded the Ephesians that Christ’s death united the Jews and Gentiles into one kingdom under His rule. Paul then showed that the kingdom, the church, manifests the wisdom of God to all powers both visible and invisible. Since the church demonstrates the wisdom of God, Paul urged them to live in peace, working together for the support of the whole group. Individually, they were to live godly lives -- the new man -- and put off the ways of sin. As a husband and wife are united so is the believer and Christ. We are under the authority of Christ and He serves us in love, nourishing and caring for us. Finally, he exhorted the Ephesians to arm themselves with the word of God and the spiritual armor to face the attacks of the enemy, Satan. By trusting in God’s power, Christians can have the victory.
