Studying the Bible -- What is the Book of Philippians About?

The book of Philippians is a letter from Paul to the church at Philippi. Though written from prison, the recurring theme of the letter is rejoicing. Paul urged them to rejoice when suffering and to view death as a step towards a better life. He told them to work diligently while they lived, but if enemies should take their lives, they would go to be with the Father. He reminded them of their heavenly citizenship and the home that would wait for them if they remained faithful. He reminded them to be good examples to unbelievers and to beware of false teachers. Finally, he thanked them for their financial support and urged them to emulate him in being content with what they have so that whether they were poor or rich, they would rejoice in the Lord.
