Studying the Bible -- Why Do We Need Salvation?

In the beginning, God made man and declared that all was good. He told Adam and Eve that they could eat of any tree of the garden except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. If they ate of that tree, they would die (Genesis 2:15-17). They did eat of the fruit and sin entered the world and, as a result, spiritual death-separation from God- and physical death (Genesis 3:22-24). Spiritual death accompanies all sin. Physical death is a consequence of the sin of Adam for access to the Tree of Life was cut off.

We have all sinned and so are worthy of death (Romans 1:32; 3:23). God, in His love for us, made it possible for us to have remission of sins through obedience of faith in Jesus.

We need salvation because we have all sinned and are therefore separated from God. We must come to God on His terms if we want to be saved (Acts 2:38).

References (King James version):

Genesis 2:15-17     "And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

Genesis 3:22-24     "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."

Romans 1:32     "Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."

Romans 3:23     "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"

Acts 2:38     "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
